Working on an oil rig site poses significant dangers to New Yorkers in this occupation. It’s important to know how to stay safe while performing such a demanding job.

Be aware of hazards

There are certain hazards that come with working on an oil rig site. Being able to identify them and being aware of them can keep you safer. Some of the biggest hazards include falls, explosions and vehicle accidents. Always wear your safety gear and secure yourself to any elevated equipment you need to work with such as a ladder. You must wear a helmet, safety harness and other protective gear.

When working around explosives, you could potentially inhale harmful gases and other substances. You should wear a facemask and goggles to protect yourself. Follow the safety guidelines as set by your employer and OSHA when working with potentially explosive materials.

Be careful when using a vehicle to get around and be aware of vehicles when you’re working.

Take caution with slippery surfaces. If floors are wet, it could lead to a slip and fall accident that results in injuries.

Don’t fall asleep

Working long hours can take its toll on anyone. However, it’s important that you avoid falling asleep while working at an oil rig site. Working while fatigued can pose serious risks of injury or illness. If you need a break, take it when it’s your time.

Know how to safely use machinery

You should be adequately trained to use machinery and other equipment in your job. Oil rig site workers who lack the right level of training could face serious injury risks. For example, it’s possible to have an accident with machinery that leads to amputations or being crushed.

Oil rig sites are risky workplaces, but with the right precautions, you can stay safer.
