What are some tips for first-time boaters?

On Behalf of | Jan 9, 2019 | Boating Accidents

Safety must be a crucial concern when boating. This is especially true for first-timers, who will lack the experience to properly deal with unexpected occurrences on the water, some of which may be highly dangerous. In order to prevent accidents from occurring, Crownline offers the following tips.

Check the weather

Weather is constantly changing on the water. That’s why it’s crucial for boaters to check and recheck conditions before setting out. If you’re inexperienced it will be harder for you to navigate storms, which could impact the safety of yourself and others aboard your vessel. If you notice a volatile weather pattern your best bet is to hold off on your trip until it passes.

Wear a life jacket

Everyone aboard must wear a life-jacket, no matter their skill level or swimming ability. This is especially true when boating in rough waters, as even the most seasoned of swimmers will be put to the test under these circumstances. Also, life vests must fit properly to offer the greatest level of protection.

Create a float plan

A float plan will let others know where you plan on going in your boat. This is crucial in the event you end up in trouble, as emergency personnel will have a hard time finding you if they don’t know your exact whereabouts. Leave a float plan with someone at the dock as well as a loved one. Also, make sure there is a first-aid kit on your boat. This will allow you to treat any injuries until help arrives.
