Is your ship ready for cold weather?

While summer is still in full swing, autumn weather is right around the corner. Conditions above deck will soon be brisk, and the risks of hypothermia are not to be taken lightly.

As the temperature begins to dip, be sure your ship has the right cold weather gear on board, whether it’s provided by the company or you bring it yourself.

Suit up

Falling overboard is even more hazardous during colder months, so having a warm flotation coat that can double as a life jacket protects you from the elements and the raging sea. An immersion or survival suit can accomplish the same goal.

Dry suits can be drawn tightly to prevent water entry, and with thermal layers underneath they offer insulation. These are for intentional entry into the water rather than a flotation safety device.

Lights to guide you

The ship should be stocked with Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacons (EPIRBs), which can help transmit a signal while immersed in water. In a rescue situation, it makes it easier to pinpoint a location. Having personal emergency locator lights also helps rescuers find someone who has fallen overboard. A ship should have enough so everyone can wear one.

Whistle while you work

It is handy for everyone have a whistle on their person, as it is an inexpensive way to attract noise without too much exertion. In case of an emergency, crew members will want to have one.

Having these basic cold weather survival items can be handy if an accident happens onboard. There is no reason working on the water must be stressful, as long as you are prepared with the right equipment.
