Tips for staying safe while working on a barge

On Behalf of | Nov 1, 2019 | Maritime Accidents

Working in the maritime industry can be one of the most rewarding careers. It is also one of the most dangerous jobs you can hold. Maritime accidents happen all too often, just like accidents on construction sites. If you are a maritime worker, it’s important to do everything possible to keep yourself safe, especially when working on a barge.

Be sure you use every piece of safety equipment you are issued upon being hired. Don’t skip one item or take one day off from wearing safety gear. If you are missing a piece of equipment, inform your supervisor immediately so a replacement can be issued to you.

Make sure the deck of the barge is organized and free from any debris that could cause a tripping hazard. This includes wires, ropes, trash and other items that could lead to a slip and fall for you or your co-workers.

Know where all the hatches and openings on the deck are located. Do not walk over them until they are closed and secured. This is something you must constantly be on the lookout for because you never know when someone might open a hatch.

Know where flotation devices and fire extinguishers are kept on every area of the barge. Know how to secure a flotation device to yourself and how to use a fire extinguisher.

Inform your supervisor of any hazards that need to be repaired or removed from the barge in order to keep everyone working on it safely.

Maritime workers need to take safety into their own hands when working on a barge. The more often you practice safe operations, the less likely it is that you will be involved in a maritime accident that can lead to serious or even deadly injuries.
